  1. Israel's return to the Old City 
  2. was an emotionally charged 
  3. event.  For the first time in 19 
  4. years, Jews could once again 
  5. pray at the Western Wall, the 
  6. remaining symbol of the Jewish 
  7. Temple destroyed by the Ro-
  8. mans in 70 CE.  The many syna-
  9. gogues, homes and shops of the 
  10. Jewish Quarter of the Old City 
  11. had been largely reduced to 
  12. rubble, but some former resi-
  13. dents returned and reconstruc-
  14. tion on a massive scale was un-
  15. dertaken.
